Bob Harris' Purpleheart Wood Dugout

Available Options

* No Filter No Photoshop *
Purpleheart origin: South America.True to its name, purpleheart boasts vibrant purple heartwood, and a fine, satiny texture. Initially a dull brown, it takes on its brilliant tone shortly after the wood is cut.

Bob Harris says ...
“We hand select our lumber. In addition, we cross cut our lumber so that the grain is horizontal, not vertical. This greatly enhances the beauty, and can only be accomplished because we hand sand every contour. mass produced pieces are vertical grain, so that they can use a router to machine the contours. Horizontal grain would tear out if run through a router.”

Available in two sizes: 4" and 3"
Includes ceramic taster!
Some smokers prefer ceramic over metal because they don’t taste metallic, are easier to clean (using a pipe cleaner), and don’t get as hot.

Meet the Artist

Bob
Grand Rapids, Michigan

I started making dugouts a little over 10 years ago as a hobby in my basement. At the time, I had a couple friends that were having difficulty finding work. The dugouts became popular quite quickly, and I realized that there was potential to expand, and give employment to a couple other people that really needed work. Today, we have 2 full time shop workers, one part time and myself. I am no longer working the shop, I simply do the books and act as the PR guy. By far the most rewarding part of this has been allowing 2 other people to make a good living in these tough times. Our favorite wood is cocobolo, Its rich vibrant colors, along with its heavy weight, make it not only beautiful, but a joy to work with.  We hand select our lumber. In addition, we cross cut our lumber so that the grain is horizontal, not vertical. This greatly enhances the beauty, and can only be accomplished because we sand by hand every contour. Mass produced pieces are vertical grain, so that they can use a router to machine the contours. Horizontal grain would tear out if run through a router. Handmade makes the difference.
